Redi showed that maggots would not generate spontaneously on food. The maggots appeared only if flies could lay their eggs on the food. However, the spores of molds and other fungi can fall onto food even if it is covered by gauze, which flies cannot penetrate. Most spores cannot survive the temperature of boiling water, so the food in the sterilized sealed jars will remain unchanged. In this part of the experiment, you will see whether bacteria and fungi can form by spontaneous generation. Begin by dissolving a bouillon cube in 500 mL (1 pint) of warm water.

This means you use two groups and treat them exactly the same except for the single factor that you are testing. That factor is often called a variable. For example, if you want to investigate whether green plants need light, two groups should be used. One group is called the control group, and the other is called the experimental group. The two groups of plants should be treated exactly the same: They should receive the same amount and type of soil and water, be kept at the same temperature, and so forth.

Prepare an eight-inch pot in which you will repot your plant. First, jam a piece of cardboard vertically into the pot. Fill half of the pot with potting soil and leave the other half empty. In a bucket, mix four parts potting soil with one part bonemeal. Fill the empty side of the eight-inch pot with this mixture. Put a strip of masking tape along the rim of the pot on the bonemeal side and mark it BONEMEAL, as shown in Figure 10. Carefully remove the piece of cardboard that you used to divide the pot in half.
